Musicians who look good, as well as sound good

Fashion, Music

Before the days of stylists and Heat magazine, style was (arguably) better in my opinion. Nowadays everything appears so over thought and staged. Musicians, not generic pop stars, but people in bands/solo artists who write their own songs, aren’t the main stream style icons anymore. They might be for some of us, but the media prefers to fixate itself on reality TV stars and X Factor presenters these days. We care more about what Cheryl Cole might be wearing than her music, but you can guarantee she didn’t pick the dress or write much of the song she’s singing. Everything is over done, with too many people working on something it then becomes trivial and meaningless because really there is no meaning behind it, it is essentially a lie. Everyone is told what to say and do by PR people, so they can relate to the public they want to relate to. Was it really very different back in the days of Led Zeppelin and Jimi Hendrix?

” Keith Richards was Keith Richards, when he was on or offstage — he was exactly the same, the cool, outlaw look. These people didn’t have stylists. They had style. Janis Joplin had style. Patti Smith had no money, so she had to put a look together. Patti loved to talk about clothes. Because she was so, so-called androgynous, or was trying to look like Bob Dylan in his Don’t Look Back phase or Keith Richards, people didn’t realize that Patti was a girl and she knew about Balenciaga and she knew about Yves Saint Laurent and she wanted a mink coat.”

The fact is, most musicians didn’t have stylists back in the 60’s and 70’s. There was Vivienne Westwood who has been since regarded as the Sex Pistols stylist, but it is not the same in comparison to the media moguls of today. She was doing something different, creating a fashion movement, not tailoring the band to appeal to a mainstream market and make lots of money. I’m sure they wanted to make money, but it wasn’t an identity mask to appeal to anyone, they were being themselves.

I love the way Jimi Hendrix dressed. He is still regarded as a fashion icon, and he was a man that did it all himself. As soon as he was paid when starting out as a musician, he went shopping in vintage clothing stores, hunting for unique pieces such as army uniforms and medallions. Everything he chose and put together was his own idea, he created his image and it was authentic.

Musicians are creative and so naturally many of them would possess style. Why employ somebody to make you dress the same as everybody else?

The vintage thing has become really really popular over the last ten years, so you’re lucky if you can still find vintage clothes at bargain prices. Most vintage retailers and charity shops know they can charge a fair amount for them.

The bands of today should ditch the stylist, but don’t disregard how important image is. It is important. I know fashion is often seen as vain and tedious , but it isn’t if you’re creative with it, it’s just another form of expression. These days I’m not sure who has a stylist and who doesn’t. Musicians like Jack White and Arctic Monkeys may have stylists on some photo shoots but I would hope that they put together their over all image themselves. Or is it just impossible not to have stylist when your a musician these days?

Sunglasses and festivals

I am extremely excited about Glastonbury. This year I managed to get a ticket with my boyfriend, I think the main reason was having good internet this time. I’ve been three times before, twice it rained a lot and the other time the temperature was at a record high! I was there the year the whole place got flooded, it was still awesome though.

I took these pictures the other day. The sunglasses are from Topshop, I love them so much! I really like the 60’s style and the colour is luscious. I thought I’d clash the colours a bit with a bright blue nail polish (Chanel Bel-Argus, £1.50 from a charity shop!) and a red lipstick from Topshop.

Summer’s nearly here!

How it feels to be 24

My photography, opinion

I guess as you get older time really does go faster. Every week seems to go by like a day used to go by when I was a child. When I was younger days would last forever, like Christmas eve, the day before your birthday or those days you had nothing to do and it was raining outside. Now a day is like an hour, and a week a day, a month a week… so on. Am I the only one feeling this? Time seems to be so fast, say you remember going out with your friends a few days ago but then your like…. NO that was like two weeks ago????? I wished my time away when I was at school, I literally couldn’t wait for it to end, but now I feel like I never want my twenties to end. Not necessarily because I’m having such an awesome time (it has its moments) just because I know I’m going to miss it when it’s gone. However, I wouldn’t say I miss school… at all.

Highlights of my instagram from the last month or so…

I like Instagram because I love taking photo’s and looking back at them. It’s a never ending photo album, a public one obviously. I do often think what will it be like when we’re older and we show our photos to friends and family… and they’re all on facebook? I do have physical photo albums but I haven’t updated them in years. I miss having ‘physical’ photographs and being able to display them nicely. Sure you can print them out, but it is a bit of a hassle and people just don’t really do it do they? Or maybe they do and I should do it more.

Here are some photographs I took in Church Stretton in the West Midlands…

Topshop bargains and being on a beach when its cold

Fashion, My photography

Well, the weather is pretty horrific at the moment. Flooding, 80 mph winds and it’s pretty cold to top it off. My room is an absolute ice cavern because the window is a poor excuse for a window and my bed is cleverly placed right in front of the radiator, therefore blocking much of the heat that would otherwise be heating the entire room. I should probably do something about that.

Me and my boyfriend braved the weather for a day out at Weston Super Mare on Sunday, a seaside town near Bristol. I hadn’t been to Weston since I was very young, so this was a nice trip down memory lane. I really do enjoy beaches when its cold and windy, there’s something really moody and emotional about it.

We went to this AMAZING chip shop called Papas http://www.papasukltd.com/ and it was seriously amazing. I’m a veggie so I didn’t have the cod but they did these insane Battered garlic mushrooms.

I definitely recommend it.

At the moment things are a bit tight with money, so I have less and less cash to spend on clothes etc. However, I went to Taunton yesterday to visit my Nana and we ended up in Topshop. I found these silver shoes for £7! Absolute bargain, I couldn’t say no. Along with that I bought a pack of silver and gold rings that were in the sale, and it all came to £10.50 which I didn’t feel too guilty about.

Catching up

Fashion photography, Music, My photography

Oh dear, I’ve very much neglected this blog over the past couple of months. A lot’s been happening!

I’m really looking forward to getting back into blogging regularly and I’ve got lots to update the blog with. Recently I’ve been settling into my new job and adjusting to lots of small changes around me. I think now that uni’s over, things are changing for the better, slowly but surely…

Here’s a quick photo diary of what’s been going on during the last few months…

Next month I’m going to see The Wytches, Drenge, Eagulls and Parquet Courts! I might even get to photograph some of them. Here’s some good ones from some of these guys…

There is an official video for The Eagulls but it doesn’t seem to be working.

I’ll be writing more in my next post, just thought I would do a quick round up seeing as I haven’t posted in a while! More fashion based posts to come 🙂

Autumnal

Fashion, Music, My photography

It’s been a while since I’ve updated, due to the fact I did manage to land myself a full time job! I work for 71 Queens, a clothes shop based in Bath and Bristol, and I do the marketing/social media/website maintenance for them at the moment. I’m so happy to be employed and doing something I really enjoy! Check out the website at www.71queens.com

I love Autumn, I love the colours, the fashion and I do like the weather unless its rainy and grey. But lets face it you can get that all year round, we live in the UK! It’s the crispy, sunny days when all the leaves are yellow and red that I like. Today I went up to Leigh Woods in Bristol for a walk around. I’m afraid I’ve got to the age where if I go out for a few drinks on Friday, I’ll probably still be feeling a bit rough on the Sunday as well as the Saturday, so fresh air seemed a good idea. That makes me sound really old…

Autumn pics from Leigh Woods

I am on the look out for the perfect Winter coat at the moment, and I keep changing my mind on the kind of thing I want. Do I want a suede coat with sheepskin, or a smart boxy one… or a soft fluffy one? For now I’ve got a pleather jacket, but it’s getting colder and colder, and that won’t keep me warm when I’m on my way to work for long.

At the moment I’m listening to King Tuff, Drenge and Disclosure. I’m really late getting on the Disclosure bandwagon, I didn’t like that Latch song at first but they’ve grown on me so much. Here’s some tunes.

I love leather!

Fashion, Fashion photography

… or pleather! As a veggie I try to go for pleather, but I cannot say for sure I don’t own anything that is actually leather.

Way back when I used to work at House of Fraser, I wore pleather shorts and trousers to work, and that was about five years ago now. I think it’s always going to come back into fashion, but you have to be careful not to over do it and look tacky. I don’t know why I love it so much, probably stems from the 90’s in some way. The new issue of Elle UK has a free Style for less magazine, and they have some great leather pieces in there. Here are some of my favourites.

If your vegetarian like me and prefer the fake stuff, there are some great alternatives. It’s also a tad cheaper, so that’s a bonus.

I’ve seen some amazing editorials recently. I do love it when they bring in all the Autumn/Winter collections. I just feel like there is more to wear and be creative with. Here are some leather themed pictures from my favourite editorials recently.

So there’s my little update on the leather trend, it’s not a trend loved by everyone but I think it’s become a lot broader recently. You can now to the tailored look with leather, as there are so many straight cut leather shirts out there, it doesn’t have to be biker chick!

Until next time!
